The Biological Basis Of Life - 973 Words

The biological basis of life is what every organism is made up up. Every organism from bacteria, mammals, plants, birds and insects are all composed of cells. Cells are the fundamental units of life in all organisms. Bacteria is the only organism that is composed of only one cell. Mammals, plants, birds, and insects are all multicellular, meaning they are composed of more than one cell. Eukaryotic cells are thee dimensional structures composed of carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids and proteins and are only found in multicellular organisms. Eukaryotic cells are made up of substructure called organelles such as the nucleus, which is discrete unit surrounded by the nuclear membrane. The nucleus is surrounded by a gel-like substance called the cytoplasm. The breaking down nutrients and converts them to other substances, storing and releasing energy, eliminating waste, and manufacturing proteins is a process called protein synthesis. Molecules live inside the nucleus and they contain t he genetic information and the cell’s functions. DNA and RNA are fundamental to cellular activities as well as life itself. The mitochondria is the cell’s powerhouse and produces energy. Ribosomes are partly composed of RNA and are essential to protein synthesis. Somatic cells and gametes are the two major types of cells. Somatic cells are composed of muscles, bones, organs, and the brain. Gametes are specifically for reproduction and are also known as sex cells.
